The Preemie Study

The Premature Birth (Preemie) Study

Principal Investigator - Natacha Akshoomoff, Ph.D.

Many children who were born preterm experience difficulties with attention and some aspects of school. More research is needed to help us better understand the nature of these difficulties.

If your child will be entering kindergarten in 2014 or 2015 and was born premature (less than 33 weeks), he or she may be eligible for this important research study.

Testing sessions will include standard tests of attention, memory, math, reading, motor, and language skills designed for children. One session will involve an MRI of the brain at UCSD. This is a safe procedure and your child will be able to watch a movie while lying still for the MRI scan. Your child will receive $20 at the end of each completed testing session and $50 for the MRI session. You will be provided a brief summary of the test results. We will follow your child each year for 3 years.
